Do not be alarmed, as was John Geiger, that a "clique of modernist preservationists" are making a misguided effort
to save the round Riverdale Hospital (1963) building in Toronto. The consensus in favour of the building could
not originate from a more sober and traditional base: The Toronto Architectural Conservancy; the chair of Heritage
Toronto; the Riverdale Historical Society; Context Development (the condo company); the Architectural Conservancy of
Ontario; and a spectrum of local neighbours and park walkers. A very unexciting list to be sure, but what we share is a
desire for an environmentally respectful reuse of a large, suitable, landmark building on park land. What we criticize is
the ("Modernist"? medieval?) insistence by the developer, Bridgepoint Health, that it is entitled to tear it down in order to
accommodate new condos and roads.
Sincerely, Steve Russell
