The Toronto Architectural Conservancy presents
A SUMMER'S W
ALK down verdant CONCORD
& DELAWARE
Avenues.
These West End streets offer a great variety of sights
if one peers through the foliage. There is sure to
be at least one of everything to be found from Second
Empire and Arts & Crafts to Moderne, with an emphasis
on large family homes in various Edwardian styles
on Delaware. Some of the architecture is quite ambitious,
some is work-a-day, but nearly all is vibrant (and
well-shaded). Often the siting is important: the corner
houses are particularly interesting.
It
is not a picture of a neighbourhood frozen in time
that you will see, yet evidence of all periods remains,
from pre-subdivision coach houses to immense Woodbridge-style
balustrades. The stock is so robust that little demolition
has occurred and adaptations engaged upon by various
owners may have at times diminished “curb appeal”
but have ensured usefulness.
